cubase audio drivers? crackles and pops...

im getting crackles and pops when using cubase (with asio driver (also for playback)),
only when recording in this software, when im using my adobe audition (with wdm drivers) im getting no conflicts... solutions could be greatly welcome, im pretty sure it could be a driver problem but im not sure which driver (my guess is patchmix or my audio interface (emu 0404) drivers that are conflicting somewhere).

and if you need extra headroom try freezing some of your tracks.
 
what is your latency value in ms registered at for your asio interface? what are you buffer settings for your asio interface? are you running any vsti's (f11 i think)? what about the performance (f12)? i found that the more vsti's i have loaded, the cpu meter gets higher and more memory is required, which eventually causes performance issues like crackles and pops. also, hard drive space was once an issue for a few sample-based vsti's that use files on a heavily-fragemented almost full hard drive.
