if i have a song finished but not yet exported in fl studio, and i go to the mixer track for master and use compression, what can it really do for my song? can it really improve the sound? if so, how?

Basically you're asking, what can a compressor do for you. A few different things. But if you're strapping a compressor across an entire mix, then it can make your mix much louder. I wouldn't expect it to improve the sound of your mix or make it sound "warm". You'll need a much better quality compressor for that kind of result. In my opinion, no software compressor I've used has colored my mix in a favorable way. But you should do a search on the net and there's a lot of information on compressors, limiters and every other type of FX.
