With a budget of $300, you're not going to find anything worth buying. Sorry, but it's true.
What you want is not a monitor that "sounds good" and "thumps." What you want is a monitor that is ACCURATE. KRK Rockits sound great for merely listening to music, but like the guy mentioned above, the only KRK's that are worth buying for mixing music are the VXT line. The VXT6 is the best all-around KRK monitor in terms of overall sound quality, but they are best when paired with the KRK subwoofer.
You can get a pair of Behringer Truth 2031a's for about $400. For the price they cannot be beat. However, I'd advise saving your cash and getting a pair of Yamaha HS80m's. They're about $300 apiece but they are phenomenal for the price and are very, very accurate. They also have 8" woofers and deliver more than enough bass for small studios.
