Trading in MBox2 + Presonus Eureaka for Profire 610 = Good Idea?

My main concern is my SM7B require a lot of gain. I currently run it through Eureaka>mbox2. I dont use the gain on the mbox much because of the noise, that means my eureaka pushes the MIC.

I dont really care about the compressor and EQ features on the eureaka.

If i can condense those 2 devices in 1 via the profire 610 I would love it, but I dont know how the profire will perform with gain knob nearly maxxed, any thoughts.

Are you happy w/ the mbox2's drivers? If so... you could consider getting a grace m101 and running it into your interface. It's said to work magic on the sm7b. though it's double the money, it might be worth it. if not... maybe look at a golden age pre 73

i hear the sm7b needs a lot of gain... so i'd be careful w/ running it just through an interface. You'd want to make sure it really has enough gain. on their spec page it says it has 53 db of gain. i hear the sm7b needs around 60 if i'm not mistaken to really shine.

would you think it neccessary with Hip hop vocals to get the m101? I've been looking into it, but I'm all about ergonomics for my studio, and i don't want to shell out an extra 300 bucks for boutique sound. Do you know it can be recorded low and amplified later without taking a hit in quality?

Also I figure the profire definetly has better a/d converter mbox so even if can't push the sm7b perfectly the clarity will be well off though a little low.
    vs.
Gracie m101 w/mbox might still sound shitty cuz of A/D CONVERTERS.

    am I correct?

Don't make the trade. You actually have a better setup with the Mbox and Eureka than just with a Profire. The one advantage of the Profire is the control panel seeing since the Mbox doesn't have one.

Have you ever heard of the CloudLifter?

Adding this can resolve your gain problem.

I would guess you're right in regards to AD converters, though I wouldn't be too too confident in MAudio when it comes to converters in general. I say this without experience on the Profire obviously, but I read... a lot lol. MAudio is usually in the "good enough" category... butit sounds like you want to break through that category and enter the "damn, that sounds good" category haha. There's a few users on here that use Profire... i'd reach out to ObiK. I know he uses one. Can't remember who else.

What exactly do you mean when you say "boutique sound"? I'm not familiar w/ that type of description. From what I read about the M101... it's about as clean a pre-amp as you can get, with a great amount of gain. If you need good clean gain without a sacrifice in quality, this is one of the best buys you can make. Read reviews on it... i doubt you'll find a bad one.

My guess would be that whatever positive in AD conversion you get from going MBox to Profire would be less than the benefit of a better preamp. People say good things about the Eureka too. You'd be going from multiple ins to a single channel pre, but i'd be willing to bet that single channel pre would sound better, if not much better. The M101 has more than enough clean gain for the SM7b from what I hear... and there are many testimonials on this combo on the net.

Personally when it comes to MAudio, I've jumped ship from their interfaces. It took one pop in my recording from their drivers for me to switch. I switched to an Echo Audio interface and noticed a huge different in conversion.. especially on th DA side. AD is just as good if not a little bit better, plus clean preamps, though I don't use them. I like the warmth I get out of my Project Studios VTB preamp. I hear good things about ProFire, but I just highly doubt MAudio's drivers have improved along w/ the hardware improvements they made. I had the Profire's predecessor FireWire410... and this is the unit that's getting pooped on by my Echo Audiofire4.

So from where you stand... i'd probably recommend upgrading to a high quality preamp like the M101.. and then upgrading the MBox later to one w/ better converters. That way.. you get the clean gain you need to really let your mic shine (if the eureka isn't doing it for you). After knowing preamps like this exist, I don't think I'd be relying on just the interface pre's if i needed substantial amounts of clean gain. A $500 interface can't possibly have the same amount & quality of gain as a $500 preamp.

Also take a look at the Black Lion Audio Auteur. It's in the same relative price range.. maybe a little cheaper. Gets outstanding reviews.
