I am not sure about that groove box but I think I may have fallen in love with that 909. Sure roland's sound banks can be used in hip hop & r&b. Have you tried the new fantom?

Please believe me the SH-32 is a piece of crap.
I don't know if you're on budget, but if you can spend more I'd get a second hand SH-101 (look for one with MIDI) - $500 - or a Roland JP-8000/8080 - $600.
Otherwise you can find a 2nd hand Roland JUNO-106 for $350; also good for basses (and more), but it lacks built-in fx and an arpeggiator.

Ask to FOE how good the SH-101 is for a.o. creating your very own bass sounds.
    I feel MOOG'ed today...

Well all in all you can take a cheap casio and use a bunch of manipulation programs and get some tight sounds out of it. It's more so not about your gear but how you use it. Except for sequencing that can't be emphasised enough.

Dont discard the emu keyboards though, even though they are romplers, ive gotten some phatt analog type sounds with mine, and they have the vintage synth expansion. ****s gettin cheaper too.

although with hiphop, a cool thing to add would be an old analog, or VA synth like the microkorg, or ms2000, ive not really specifically heard any roland SH. But i always thought the sh32 seemed like a cool idea. But like previously stated, ive not heard good things about it. I definately always thought a VA synth to add to for hiphop would be very cool. SO i would recomend a korg ms2000, from my interpetation of your post. and this is also the next board im lookin at. Peace.
