    guys,
    been thinking out making some changes to my synth set up and was wondering if any of you had any thoughts on the jp8000.
    cant find anyone with one to have a listen to which would be the obvious thing to do but have been thinking that maybe ill get rid of my roland juno 60 to make room for one.
    i already have a:
    nord 2
    multi moog
    SCI prophet 600
    SCI six trak
    korg ms 10
    roland jx3p + pg200
    Yamaha DX7
    fb383
    roland rs-09 organ string synth
    and the juno 60 around the place so maybe theres no point in it.
    anyone got any thoughts?

    I personally do not like the JP8000 but that is just me. Do not base your decision of whether or not to get one on my opinion.

    BUT, I would say not to get rid of you Juno 60 or anything else to "make room" for it. If you need the space, just get the rack version.

    hey dude, if you want to hear a JP in action check my tune Walking in the Acid planet link in my sig. The JP is playing the main synth (acid type sound) part.

    I love my JP-8000 and use it for specialised sounds that just cant be recreated on any other synth I have heard.

    A worthwhile addition to any electronic artists setup. Just dont expect it to do too many jobs.

    I have the rack version of the JP (the JP-8080) and the longer I have it, the more I love it
    but I can say you - when you can afford it - take the analog ancestor of it (Jupiter 6 or 8 or MKS-80) for still better sounds (with the same modelling features); I'm looking by myself very carefully to buy a Jupiter 8 or MKS-80 (as I wrote you already in my pm, dvyce )

    P.S.: great for string sounds/pads, but I presume your JX3-P is great for that too, isn't it

    thanks for the replies guys,

    they have been some help. i have quite a few synths and these have been fairly fine tuned over the years with lots more coming and going in a process to get an array to cover specifically all that i need as i am sure you all agree that no one thing can cover it all.

    i had found myself using the juno less and less recently and had heard some good things concerning the jp8000 and so was thinking (due to my chronic gear buying disease) that maybe it might be an idea to swap out the juno for the jp8000.

    wasnt sure what sort of stuff it could do however hence the query, i listened to a demo song from it but i am sure you all agree that you often wonder if these really are made from the synth or are just a wee recording inside lol. have you heard the nord lead 2's, it seems to suspiciously go over 4 parts yet thats all it can do

    i dont really have any use for acidic sounds in my work, certainly not more than can be covered by the FB383 which is mainly redundant nowadays. i will pop pver and check out your track after this though TRD.

    thanks for the thoughts on the jupiter / mks option THM. i hadnt realised the link between these and the JP8000 but had often thought about getting one.

    you are right about the JX3P and its pads and strings though. its all i have it for. there wouldnt be any point in getting another synth just for these as they would need to be damn good to compete with it or the RS09 for strings.

    if the jp8000 is a more specifc sound synth than a general worker then perhaps i need to think a bit harder on it all.

    I just have to mention something that I really hate about the marketing schemes of synth manufacturers. They try to trick people into buying new synths by naming them similarly to older vintage synths. Meanwhile, they are not anything like their namesake.

    Kork MS-20 <--> Kork MS-2000
    Roland Jupiter-8 <--> Roland JP-8000
    Roland SH-3 <--> Roland SH-32
    Oberheim OB-8 <--> Oberheim OB-12
    Roland TR-x0x <--> Roland MC-x0x
    MiniKorg <--> MicroKorg

    etc, etc, etc...

    beware!!

    dvyce,
    thanks for the reply.
    i am glad to see i wasnt the only one aware of this situation.
    in rolands mighty rush they even managed to forget that they already had a good MC range but obviously the lack of forward thinking also prevented them from coming up with a new letter sequence
    i try to steer clear of these type of things and actually if you exclude my outboard and sampler, my nord is the only thing i have that has been built in the last ten or maybe even 15 years.

    i dont think the jp is worth thinking about for me anymore although the jupiters still are. i had heard some good things and was also thinking it might be time to change out the old juno as its being used less and less hence the question.

    it seems that its only real strengths are pads and strings, which i have well covered with the JX3P already or strange noises but given my current synth pile i am not short in this area at all.
    maybe ill just get some new patches for the dx7 and get off my bum to get into programming it properly.
    its times with this synth that i wish i didnt run an entirely hardware studio and could get a pc editor going for it.
    maybe ill stick one onto my laptop and then i can take it into the studio when i need to create sounds.

    I own Waldorf Q and MWXT2 and a Roland JP8000.
    Jp8000 does soft things the best. It is the best (other than real analog of course) for lush pads, srings, etc. I have had it for years and will never let it go.

    It is certainly not aggressive, sharp, nor edgy. All of it's sounds have a smoother tone.

    depends on what type of music or sound you are trying to acheive.

    Waldorfs are hard, edgy in your face type.
    Roland more round. The JP8080 sits in a mix, and sticks out less.

    JUST AN OPINION.. =)
