the modular is great according to what is said on http://www.vintagesynth.com, but u need a software to program patches.
For a good VA, i think there is no doubt, if u check this forum you'll notice that two names are always there, Access Virus and Novation Supernova

I have many synths and the one that seems so all around good in so many ways is the micromodular. So I can imagine how great the nord modular regular rack is. It has that deep smooth sonority of the Virus and the potential for some really twisted and more organic industrial sounding patches as well. There are many thousand patches I've found on the internet and some are very very good. I don't imagine I'll do anything but tweak what I've found. I think the last count was over 3000 patches I've downloaded then I got tired. I know of several other URLs I've got to check out too. For me the price of the micromodular is worth the access to this huge library of sounds from this enormously versatile synth. The software is so well programmed and designed and that does really made a huge difference to me. When I'm in the editor I always think to myself how much I adore this synth. (Also, The manual is the best I've seen and a great tutorial on sound and sound building...)

I would bet you could not go wrong with the Virus C, Micro Q either but I was so impressed by the quality and design of the micromodular that I lost my desire to look furthur.... (though I know one day I'll get one of these others down the road)
