Hi Serko, welcome to FP !!

Only thing I know about the MicroKorg is that it is based on the same sound engine as the as famous Korg MS-2000 (very popular with hiphop producers). I'm not such an MS-2000 fan but I don't produce hiphop - so maybe that explains everything...

The MicroKorg is not a sampler (as you're talking about samples - or did I misunderstood that ?) - if you want a sampler than you should look for 2nd hand stuff or if you have pretty much cash you should try the Korg Triton-series or Yamaha Motif-series - both are more or less the most popular hiphop workstations containing synth, sequenser, and onboard sampler (beware: I think the Motif racks and the Triton LE are missing the onboard sampler, but the Triton LE has an optional space to add the particular sampler later)...
    I feel MOOG'ed today...

use the search button to look for "Neptune gear", there are a lot of post talking about them....

I like a lot small synths, cause they are easy to carry, great for traveling.

If you have in mind to travel or play out of your house, small synths like the Microkorg are good.

But always portable or small synths make some sacrifice to keep on a affodable size. There are lots of options of friendly user synths, don't focus on the microkorg.

So if you wanna produce hip hop on your house, (it depends a lot of your budget) you're gonna need a sampler. if you are not too expert on using them, get a friendly user sampler like the SP 808 (it has a vocoder similar to the Microkorg) or the MC 09 Phrase lab. Those are great low budget options.
If have more money, you could search for a 2nd hand AKAI MPC . They are not synthetizers but great samplers.

But if you can invest between $1000-2000, get a workstation like those THM said. The workstation is good to start producing almost any kind of music.

I found a workstation for HIP HOP around $900.

    http://www.emu.com/products/product....9&product=1091

I can't give you an opinion, but It's similar to HALO. It has the same design and engine, but with hip hop oriented sounds, and other functions.

Check this keyboard. Great price, and oriented to your music style...

    Moving to EMU pruducts.

I'm already selling the Phantom, I'm not using it for any s*it, I even regret for the $1.200 I paid for it.

I just tried in lunch hours the electronica oriented synth from EMU, the XK-6.

I was using it for 45 min on the local dealer for Yamaha, but they also have the XK-6, the yellow one.

This synth has GREAT trance oriented sounds. Totally different from all the other stuff I've ever heard.

It can plays continuously your songs, without stopping to change program or performance mode. You can assign parameners of the groove effects to the programmable knobs to twist gate, velo, string, swing fx, transponse, etc.

You can wire the arpeggiator to an external MIDI clock, and create dense arpeggio scales similar (but no so complex) to the KARMA engine.

The salesman explained me that each sound has 12 different kinds of filters, the drum kits sound very analogic, others have totally new sounds, weird, bizarre.

This synth is a monster. It has nothin to envy from synths like Phantom 88, , for the 30% of the price. I can't talk to much, since I used for 45 minutes. Or some keyboards are overpriced, or this EMU people have become nuts.

I love the MS2000 but I don't use it for hip hop. it also can do nothing for sampling. I like the sp-808 but I wouldn't call it newbie-friendly. The electribe ESX let's you crank out a good sounding hip hop beat, and it let's you sample, and the tubes will make it sound pretty damn good with out having to do any post production. It's a little more expensive than the MicroKorg though...

a little more? Twice the price

I can do nothing but recommend you to see the Hip Hop Emu keyboard at your nearest dealer. You can expand it with even three sound cards at the same time, more hip hop sounds, vintage sounds, orchestta sounds,,,
    And it's around Microkorg's price

I have a microKorg, the only thing that dissappointed me was that it didn't have as many cool sounds as I hoped. I bought my microKorg before I saw the Neptunes use it in their Clones DVD documentary but I guarantee you they use more syntesizers than just the microKorg. On the Clones album, I can tell they used that synthesizer very little.
