I would prefer a 61 key since thats what I've always used but im sure a 49 isnt a huge difference.

No real big difference,I occasionally switch boards for the look lol.If you got a 49 key just up the notes in your d.a.w if you can,I know Fl studio and I THINK reason can.

Disagree... this definitely an advantage to having 61 keys over 49 keys. I wish I had the money and space for my board's 61 key version almost every day.

That extra octave really helped with playing certain parts. Particularly pianos. Hitting the octave key mid-play gets old. And what happens if you want to strike a chord that spans more than 49 keys? You have to do it in two parts. Makes for an unnatural feel (unless you just quantize everything... which doesn't always give a good result for every instrument).

Also, certain Bass instruments like Trilian use the entire board to trigger sounds. In Trilian, you can hit some really quick bassline riffs if you have quick access to the top half of the 88keybed. So... on my 49, it's physically impossible to play certain parts live. And don't even think about playing keystrokes on a 49 key.

So... there is a definite big difference... but whether or not you're actually effects you or not depends on what you're playing. For simple chords.... 49 is fine. But for any type of producing/composing beyond intermediate, you'll probably find that that extra octave comes in handle.

I started w/ a 76 key controller. Oh how I miss it so lol
