The mpc2k I used to have came with it when I bought it, but if not I would have bought the 8-outs instead.
In short no it is grossly overpriced, and freeware vst effects poop all over it many times over.
Better tracking into your daw, and adding effects there.
hell no it aint worth it Akai makes Crappy FX
AKAI MPC 4000 THE KING !!!!!
Fo Show I know What Iama Do!!
its better than nothing i guess... i got the fx board before getting the 8 outs... i regret that, the board was expensive the time i bought it.. i should have gotten the 8 outs and a mixer instead, that way i would have been able to use inserts and auxes on the mixer and use hardware fx instead (i do have this now).. so i wouldnt be stuck with just the fx board
For the money you would spend on the Akai Fx card, you could get an Ensoniq DP4 effects unit. You could probably find it for the same price or even cheaper; it's definitely worth it's weight. (Think ASR 10 effects but with 3 different effects chips. Routing if extremely flexible.)
I really beleive the guys on mpc-fourms would feel differently. Usually its a mixed bag, and truly depends on what you want to do with it. As with anything you only get out what you put in to it, so if you don't take the time or effort to put any time in to understand and know your equipment, of course its going to be horrible. I'm sure 99.99999999% sure that there are plenty of established producers/beatmakers made their tracks using that very same fx board (same guys who made only 20 secs worth of sample time work ... which by todays standard is low but ppl still use those machines). Honestly I wouldn't use any other hardward but a computer with a daw that runs vst's for efx. I know plenty of ppl feel otherwise and like the "analog" sound, but again its preference not to mention the various songs that are recorded, mixed, and mastered in an 100% digital enviorment.
Bottom line is: Choose whats best for you, because advice is only as good as the source its from, and the application of said advice used by the advisee.

from what I have seen the FX board is deff a mixed bunch. If you plan on using it and tweaking it you make get a lot out of it. But I own a DP4 effects board like somebody mentioned above and I'm sure it kills the MPC 2000xl fx board. Another question 4 is you is why are you sending it away? Installation of one of those in only a few mins. You should get used one off ebay and put it in yourself. ALso ask yourself do you want to deal with all the cableing? WHen you install the fx board you get 2 multi fx plus the reverb all inside the box and I have heard that cheap ass verb on a lotta tracks, so I know it has some value if you freak it.
I bought my 2KXL with the 8-Outs, and tracked into PT. Never missed having effects on board. You get better effects in free VSTs, to be honest.
And it's been a while, but I think I remember that the effects only apply to the stereo outs (not the optional outs), so you can only take advantage of the effects board if you plan to mix in the MP (which is a deal breaker for me anyway).
If you do decide to buy one, install it yourself and save yourself the extra cash and downtime. It's crazy easy to install that ****.
Good luck on your ultimate decision!
