    iPod for producing

    Hey,

I saw and read that the iPad is becoming more and more a very useful tool in music production. Can someone point out some good apps and such how I can utilize an iPad (maybe even my iPhone) for producing? I'm talking about using it in conjunction with other software (like Logic and Reason) as opposed to standalone Apps.

    Thanks!

I saw a demonstration of Garageband for iPad the other day at the Apple store...maybe it has some functionality with Logic? Might be helpful to look into that

Making music on mobile devices is not new but it's best to think of handheld devices as basic sketch pads rather than full on production environments.

A lot goes on behind the scenes of a production to make sure everything goes according to plan. Any number of people can be attached to a show, working on numerous projects in different departments. These many different strands of work have to be brought together, and there can be a lot to keep track of.

It's possible, but I wouldn't put anything out before transferring everything to have it mixed and mastered properly.

Gorillaz made their album "The Fall" using an iPad so it's definitely possible.

You should also know that the ideal setup 20 years ago was an EMU SP1200 and Akai S950. An iPad with NanoStudio is light years ahead of that setup.

Don’t worry about people stealing an idea. If it’s original, you will have to ram it down their throats.

For all-around sampling and synth use, I like NanoStudio. Tabletop is nice if you're not going to sample anything more than simple sounds (i.e. drums) and it's very expandable. FL Studio Mobile is an awesome step sequencer and has decent sounds (no sampling). Beatmaker 2 is tops IMO for sample-base production and sequencing. Also, look for apps that support Audiocopy/paste between apps. Most apps don't allow complex sample editing. I use TwistedWave to edit my samples and then paste them into my app of choice. Whenever I need a sample source, I've been known to use my iPhone as a source and then I run a wire to my iPad using Tascam's iXZ ($30).

FL Studio Mobile is the biggest waste of money out of all the apps. Don't get fooled into buying it because of the desktop version's reputation. The app is a damn joke compared to Nanostudio or Beatmaker 2.

I think mobile apps are great for dropping a sketch on the fly, but i would suggest using a proper DAW for mixing.

I think people are getting the wrong idea. Sorry if I didn't explain better. But what I meant is iPad apps that utilize your DAW. Like, using the iPad for MIDI input just additional interface to display things that you don't always want to pull up on your monitor.
