Hybrid studio Warming up digital sound. what should I get

I've pretty exclusively been in the box with all manner of software. I visted a local producer and seen how he does things ( mostly sample based thru an MPC) I was wondering how I can get better warmth out of my digital sounds because everything comes out soulful and warm that he does. Toy Box Scholars - Damage Control - YouTube I know for a fact that he records to tape.

But that aside I want to run my FL Studio thru something piece of hardware that will give my instruments that nice soulful sound. Is there anything anyone would suggest that would do it in one stop. I've looked into vsts but havent found anything exclusively for saturation or warmth. I've found compressors modelled after vintage gear but its really not the same.

If you turn digital to analog how does it fill the missing data?

I'm think like some kind of outboard or mixer. I currently have an MBOX 2 + Presonus Eureaka for pre amp.

    $500 BUDGET.

There's some really good saturation plugs out there. I would start w/ those first to see if u can hit some of the sounds you want.

Bootsy (Bootsie? sp?) makes some extremely good ones. (They're actually free) I really like the saturation on the VCS he made.

Also WaveArts makes a very very very good saturation plug. It eats up a hell of a lot of CPU though... but in your case it might be worth using it and bouncing the clips, then turning it off.

I'd probably try those first before grabbing hardware.

Also.... question... is there a big difference in monitoring environment between your setup and the local producers? Maybe what you're hearing is an effect of a better listening environment?
