    processors for music

just wondering, why are processors like celerons good for making music. ive seen people say this in threads, but i havnt seen them give an explanation. i also did a search, but couldnt find an answer, so if anybody could give me a good reason they are not good for music that would be great.

    -thanks in advance.

edit: i want to know this, because i bought a toshiba laptop for when i go to school in the fall. and scince im going to school, i plan on converting my setup to software. i wanted to know would it be fine for me to run reason, and maybe another program like recycle on? remember, this really is just a hobby for me, so im not really worried about sound quality and what not...but would this run fine?

celerons arent gonna be very good for production. the way ive always thought of them is theyre the pentiums that didnt quite pass the quality tests. for just reason and recycle you should be fine tho.

as far as which is better, its really hard to explain why one or the other is better. you just have to look at the results. for example, athlons kick the sh*t out of p4's in gaming. dont ask why, they just do. same with p4's and some multimedia stuff.
I play piano, guitar, drums, and trombone. I'm a regular one man band. Ask me something about computers, 90% of the time I'll have the answer.

All a celeron is, is a striped down version of the Pentium Processor.I don't think it would be as good as and Pentium or AMD Processor but like everything else depends what your doing.

I'd try it though, just make sure you have alot of ram say least 512(the m ore the better) and record some tracks with diffrent sample rates, and if using windows XP open up your processor usage(Tack Manager/Processor tab) and just monitor it while recording,Recording at the higer sample rates Say 24bit/96khz will more and likely drain your system.but Recording at say 16bit/48 khz would be a better choice on that system.

    Good Luck

They pretty much nailed it on celerons don't work good for heavy software applications. The reason why is that they are pentium chips that basically don't have any cache (bad cache). This was explained to me by one of my proffessors that use to work for Intel. You can do a search on the web for which chips are built to handle heavy work loads. However no matter how fast a computer you have you can always bog it down with some application. The speed of computers in the next ten years should be something to watch.

My proffessor also went on to say that the reason why computers had reached a threshold was because of current technology. They don't have the tools to make the processors grow by leaps and bounds as they did before. So they are working on new technology to allow for the improvement of comp market. 64bit technology will be the next big mover along with the hyperthread (currently available). Rather than windows alot of computer buffs are turning to Linux. I think I will get off the soap box now, lol. Hope this helps.

Get whatever you want. These days anything is fast enough, especially in hip hop, where memory and speed requirements are low.

thank you for all your information...

however i think im going to stay with hardware.

because although i like reason, i would want something to controll it, and i dont want to run into latency issues.

but thank you all, i learned a lot!

I was advised not to get a celeron when i builty my pc, but im rewiring tons of crap together and pushin some heavy load vsts, id get a p4 just for the fact that if you get sick of just using reason...which isnt doubtful, youll be kickin yoself in the ass when u have to go buy a new M/B and CPU...the p4 3.2 w HT techno is sick. works like a dream and handels everything i thro at it.
