mixer or audio interface?

Hi,
I am hoping to buy a usb mixer with a built in interface, but should I buy an external interface instead? Does it matter?

it matters based on your projected recording needs and scenarios:

individual instruments and maybe individual mics recorded simultaneously to separate tracks then you need an interface with multiple ins and outs
individual instruments and maybe individual mics recorded simultaneously to a stereo track then you need an interface with stereo ins and outs, i.e. a usb mixer will suffice

single mics/instruments recorded one at a time simple interface or usb mixer is fine
 
If i could choose all over again i'd buy a controller mixer, like the makie control surface and an audio interface. Allen & Heath do this combined, the Firewire zed desk. It's an audio interface and midi controller.

Before I knew much i bought a big 32 desk with usb and had a pci sound card too. The desk is pretty redundant now. I'd much prefer the hands on feel back to mixing.
