    iPhone as input device

I'm just an amateur music production enthusiast, but this has been racking my brain for a while now. I didn't know where to look for answers so I just signed up to ask here.

Essentially all I want to do is to hook up my iPhone 4 to my computer and have the sounds made on the phone to come out through my headphones or external speaker, whichever I have enabled.

I tried simply plugging a 1/8" jack directly into the line in port on my motherboard (I didn't buy a soundcard because I didn't plan on doing anything like this) but I get nothing. I'm able to hear the faint static as I move through menus and such but that's it.

I thought something like this would be trivial, but I guess not. Do I need some special adapter or controller?

This was all just to hear it. To actually use it as an input device I can record would require something else I imagine.

Some apps let you export to email so you get a nice mp3 or wav in your inbox which makes it a ton easier. Otherwise I'd take a look at a simple stereo audio interface and buy the appropriate connectors to record with.

It does play sound with headphones right? If it does then yeah try a different interface IF your app doesn't allow you to export. All of IK's apps allow you to export, export to Soundcloud and export to Email.

If you want to record onto the iPhone you'll need to use either a dedicated iOS device interface (lots available with many more on the horizon), or alternatively you can use Apple's camera connection kit to give you a USB port to plug a USB interface into.

I'd recommend the latter as you'll then have an interface that would double as an interface for your PC / Mac and you can use the audio inputs to recieve signal from your iPhone into the PC and record it into your software.

I would recommend getting an interface either way as the sound quality produced using the method you're trying would be pretty poor to be honest and might not be worth your while.
