How do you hook up Dual Monitors?

The desktop I just ordered has one VGA Port, One DVI Port, One S-Video/TV Out, One SPDIF Port, and one Firewire port. I ordered one LCD Flatscreen(17") online for a good price. The connector for that monitor has obviously the vga connector at the end. So with one VGA port being occuiped. How would I hook up a second monitor to my desktop? Can I go with the second monitor, using a VGA to DVA cable, to the DVI port on my computer? Or should I have both monitors VGA cables going into a VGA splitter to the VGA port on the back of my desktop? Thanks...

you should have ordered a video card that supports a dual monitor set up. just because it has all those ports doesn't mean it will support dual monitors. the dual monitor set up i had, used a dvi out going into a splitter and i was able to set it up in the display preferences. if you have questions about your machine, you should ask the people you're buyin it from, i'd assume they'd be the experts on thier products. you generallyl wanna ask questions like this before the purchase just to ensure you don't get disappointed with stuff you can use the way you'd like.

depending on the type of computer, it will probably support dual monitor out of the box. you can hook one monitor up with the dvi and one with the vga.

What type of video card is it (need make model, chipset, etc...)?

This is really independent of the PC, the PC you buy has little to do with dual monitor support. It's all about the video card, driver, and OS.

To give you an idea, I have an extra old IBM PC300GL, P2-333MHz machine running Win2000 with a Matrox G450 Dual Head PCI video card. Dual displays work quite well on it AND it'll work with Win98SE as well.

it should work with what you have... all you would need is a dvi to vga adapter (there like 10 bucks or so). when you get the second monitor hooked up right click desktop>click properties>goto settings tab> click on monitor 2> "and check the extend my windows desktop onto this monitor" > apply and your done...you might have to change the resolution to match the first monitor if they are the same size.

i just upgraded from 2 19" crt's to 2 22" lcd the old monitors only supported vga..the new lcd's support both dvi and vga..so sooner or later i'm upgrading my video card to one with 2 Dvi outputs

Uhhhhh, you said you have a DVI and a VGA out?

Plug a monitor into each, and you should be done. That's all I did for my pc, you don't need to run two dvi's or split it or anything.
