8 Core CPU? Yep... see if in my future

Just found out Presonus S1 will definitely utilize 8 core processors, and even up to 16.

That's crazy... b/c when I built my computer a 2 years ago the general concensus was that quad core is still the best buy, since "DAW's don't even see the extra cores", and "the music industry isn't caught up yet to technology... everything is still 32 bit, most DAW architectures don't support a multithread more than 4... etc etc".

It's gonna be a VERY MERRY Christmas :-) lol

(Not like my quad core isn't enough for what I need... but damn... I'm a sucker for bigger & better!)

    Remember Moore's Law:

"Technology will double in speed/capacity/etc and will halve in cost every 18 months"

Moore's law - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

of note in the above article is the following corollary law
The Great Moore's Law Compensator (TGMLC), generally referred to as bloat, and also known as Wirth's law, is the principle that successive generations of computer software acquire enough bloat to offset the performance gains predicted by Moore's Law. In a 2008 article in InfoWorld, Randall C. Kennedy,[34] formerly of Intel, introduces this term using successive versions of Microsoft Office between the year 2000 and 2007 as his premise. Despite the gains in computational performance during this time period according to Moore's law, Office 2007 performed the same task at half the speed on a prototypical year 2007 computer as compared to Office 2000 on a year 2000 computer.
Hence my other statements about bloatware here and on other forums, it is why I am waiting for Windows 8, as it seems to have all of the gain and none of the pain that we experienced with Win7, same as when we went from Win98SE to WinXP rather than stopping by Millenium and Win2000 in our school system as the improvements did not outweigh the problems introduced....

I'm excited to see programming code become leaner and meaner as programmers gradually become less reliant on hardware technology to keep their software running quickly.

More low-level code optimization and in-depth-work on algorithms.

Pro Tools does take advantage of hyperthreading (also lets you choose how many core and thread to use. I'm not sure if any other DAW does just yet.
I saw a girl texting & driving the other day & it really made me mad, so I rolled down my window & threw my whiskey flask at her.

Nice... I was moreso referring to most DAWs not seeing anything more than 4 cores. At least that's what the general consensus was 2-3 years ago.

I haven't tried every DAW extensively.. so I wouldn't know Just happy mine does! lol

PS... from what i'm reading, it turns out the 8core AMD I was referring to might not be as good as it claims to be. It's single thread abilities were apparently compromised for the sake of adding more "cores". So it's not a true 8 core... more like 4 cores that thinks it's 8 cores and added additional transistors to make it all work.

I might eventually grab AMD's 6 core phenom, which would probably behave better for audio, or wait until AMD releases something truly impressive.

Or maybe even go the Intel route one day. I just refuse to drop that kind of money.

Intel is more money, but time and time again they out perform AMD. Why not try an older gen Intel i5 or i7. I'm willing to bet they'll outperform a ton of the AMD options you are looking at.
