The Alesis M1 in my opinion is the best choice because it produces the most accurate sound out of the bunch atleast from my experience. However monitors in that price range aren't very reliable because they can't pick up as many frequencies as more expensive models especially in the low ends. Monitors are a very important component in the field were in unlike other types of equipment where as long as you have the skill it doesn't matter how good what ever your using is. There important because you want to be creating something that is going to sound exactly how it does when you made it. Sometimes this doesn't happen because your speakers trick you into making something that sounds awesome through them, but sounds completely different played in the car or on other types of media players. I do understand the budget issue though because I was in the same position at one point so i would recommend the Alesis, but save up for an audio interface, and some higher quality monitors they'll help take you to the next level.

In descending order: Alesis, then Akai, then M-Audio. MOST LIKELY.

I owe those Alesis speakers, and Project-Ghost is right, they aren't much reliable and have problems with lower frequencies, but I guess any of those monitors you mentioned wouldn't expose those frequencies properly.

Of those 3, Alesis M1's. And as mentioned, I'm just going to agree with em.. in the price range, you're not going to find the best frequency handling. I'd also have to agree with Project Ghost in what was said about SAVING UP. Do it now, so you're not continously buying the lower end stuff to keep getting you by because another piece broke down. Even if you got into a pair of Yammies... like the Yamaha HS series, not TOP TOP TOP of the line gear, but they will sound SOOO much better and you'd be starting at around 200 per monitor on the 5". I know, that's going to end up being 4 times as much as you're looking at now, but, it will be worth the investment. I know you didn't say it, but just want to throw this out there just in case:: don't jump right in for 8" monitors either, the 5 and 6 inch ones work just the same at the lows, and especially at mid and high frequency. If for the reason you feel the need to monitor a lot of driving bass, then maybe invest in a powered studio sub. Otherwise, keep the tag low, get something from Yamaha or maybe KRK, and later one when the money rolls better, step up to some Adam Audios or Events. Best of luck! Cheers friends.
