for anyone interested in or already using linux and open software, I've started a website that showcases a variety of different softsynths (only synths, no samplers, sf2 players, etc) that are included in most distros and downloadable for free. I've also made some audio demos, in .ogg format (preferable over mp3) on each synth's demo page:

I've also put some demos of just amsynth (now with 12 128-patch soundbanks) on Soundcloud here:
