A life without Midi . . .

It has been just over 30 years since the creation of Midi, but where would we be without it?

Before Midi, Producers would spend hours attempting to find the right musicians to attend their Studio, form an improvisational piece of music, record, mix and master it. Nowadays, all we need to do is load up our DAW and find an instrument we like the sound of and improvise. Just think about how much of our time and cost Midi has enabled us to save . . .

Midi also gives more opportunities to the advancing Home-Producers who haven't been musically trained. I.E instead of getting a beat soundingperfectly in-sync through hours of practice, you could easily quantize this beat toget the correct rhythm. This factor enables the Producer to sell their Beats on more of a consistent basis.

Additionally, Midi is not just found on a Keyboard. Oh no! Midi is used to power: Theme Park Rides, Mobile Phones, Video Games etc. Dave Smith's invention has powered a new generation of technology.

Of course, there are always drawbacks . . .

The Monophonic Sound that a Midi Keyboard produces can sound unmusically mechanical. This could potentially leave listeners with the options to lose interest in your product and the service that you offer.

Effects are pretty limited. Take a look at your midi Keyboard and what do you see? A Pitch Bend and a Modulation Controller? Perhaps this is something that Midi could consider developing. Of course, we are always entitled to the effects that our DAW can offer, but perhaps designers should begin to think outside of the box and offer us more leeway with our Midi Keyboards . . . just a thought.
