Switching between VST's with a midi controller? (In Ableton or anything else)

I'm trying to configure my controller to be able to switch between vst's with the numerical buttons on my EMU Xboard 61, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to assign a vst to each button. I press the midi button and live, and click the button I want to assign it to on the keyboard, to no avail. If Ableton doesn't support this, does anyone know a DAW which does? (Not FL Studio mind you, it has minute hiccups in sound which are completely random and not associated with latency whatsoever rendering it unusable in a live venue type situation) I've looked around the interwebs including the manual for my keyboard and several different forums, but came up fruitless. If any of you can help I'd greatly appreciate it.
 
What version of Ableton are you using? Also, are you trying to quickly get the keyboard to play a hardware device, and then jump over to a vst? Or something similar?
 
I'm using Live 8.0.4, and all I'm trying to do is have the buttons on my midi controller switch between different vst's. I don't have any actual midi devices, my controller is utilizing exclusively software.
