logic surround

Im having trouble recording surround sound with logic. The way Im doing it (and Im sure it should work this way) is to set the output of a track to 'surround' and record some audio. Then on playback I arm the A-Playback track and press record on the transport, and as the sound is playing back I try to move the sound with the little surround control window (in 5.1). Now, in this little window the stereo pair of speakers are coloured orange, and the C, RL, RR are blue. But as I move the sound towards any of the blue speakers the sound quietens before becoming silent. There is no problem with my desk or speaker setup. Any ideas?

Wrong sound card drivers or channels in use.
I don't know about logic, but in reason i have to select whatever channels i want to use for that session. ie i can select an all around stereo channel, or i can select my front and rear and centre channels for 5.1 stuff.
