How can I control insert effect plugins with a midi keyboard in Cubase 7?

So as the title says, I'm looking for a way to do this smoothly.

I am an old Ableton user, and there you could simply switch the focus to the device you wanted to control, and if that plugin had a midi mapping function, it'd automatically switch the controls over to that plugin, and I could start automating stuff.

However in Cubase I've run into a bit of a problem. The vst instruments themselves control just fine and focus is shifted to whatever track I have currently selected in the sequencer, this is great. However I can't seem to be able to just for example click on one of my insert effects and immediately use my midi mappings that way.

So my question is, how do I go about to achieve this?

I'm guessing it has something to do with the remote control editor, so how can I make my midi keyboard switch to it when it's selected? If it's even possible I guess.
