hardware-like digital audio workstation

There is such a thing as a hardware based DAW such as the discontinued Roland MV 8800 etc but they tend to lack the flexibility of a computer based DAW then there was that stupid Open Labs shit where they crammed a computer into a impractically goofy box in the shape of a keyboard, but in my opinion your best bet is to get a decent computer to run the DAW and manipulate that shit with a MIDI controller or alternatively you could go for some proprietary controller and DAW shit like NI Maschine.
 
I guess Reason is still in some ways a "hardware inspired" DAW, even though it has come a long way from its humble roots as just a rack of virtual instruments...
