Cubase SX VST instument help

I followed the directions for adding a VST instrument but when I try to open any sort of MIDI editor, they are all greyed out.
I'm sure that I'm missing a really obvious step

Make a new project

Hit F11 to pull up the VST Instruments window, click in one of the slots and add an instrument

Go back to playlist window, right click in the area next to the playlist, choose "add midi track"

Make sure the track you added is selected, then go to the inspector (far left pane), click the text box labelled "out:" and choose the instrument you added

Hit 8 for the draw tool then draw in the playlist so you have something to edit (this is probaly what you are missing by the sound of it)

Hit 1 for the object selection tool then double click the area to edit it.
