Cubase SX & Reason 2 rewired - Sound burst and stutters

I recently started rewiring Cubase SX and Reason 2. It will play out alright, but when it gets to a more complicated part of a track or if I start making knob adjustment, it'll start looping/stuttering painfully loud burst of sound. If I hit stop and start from where it left off, it'll do the same thing, it won't play out the track after this happens. I have to rewind the track to get it to play normally. Even when I hit play and plays out normally, I get this same loud burst of sound when it starts playing. I assume that I have a slowdown somehwere. I'm thinking I may need more RAM, cuz my CPU is should be good enough. Here's my setup:

P4 1.5
256 megs
win2k
sblive

Is it likely that the soundcard is the culprit? I know I should really get something more professional, but I'm not clear how the soundcard could cause slowdowns. I'm not using any external gear except a midi controller.

Thanks
