Cubase LE 1.07, Vista Home Premium, Alesis Photon X25- how?

My kids have been using Cubase LE. It's an older version, (version 1.07) with an Alesis Photon X25. I guess I could download the latest update for Cubase LE, but it limits the VST tracks to only 2.

Anyway, they have been using Windows XP with this setup. I recently bought them Windows Vista laptops.

Steinberg doesn't list Cubase LE as being compatible with Windows Vista. This may be because it's a free product, or there actually may be some issues- I don't know. It doesn't exactly say it won't work either.

I have seen a few posts on various forums where people are claiming to have Cubase LE working on Vista, but it's never a problem free setup. I see posts about it working, but registry errors, or not being able to use certain plugins, etc. I'm hoping someone will be able to help me get it set up without the errors.

Does anyone out there know if there are any tricks to getting Cubase LE 1.07 to work in Windows Vista Home Premium? Or is anyone out there using the Photon X25 in Windows Vista?

I don't want to mess their systems up by installing something that will cause crashes (they need these laptops for school too). At the same time, if there is a way to make this work, then I should probably get it set up for them.

Anyone have any tips or advice?

The setup in question is:
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 (1.7 Ghz)
OS: 32 bit Vista Home Premium
RAM: 1 GB
Sequencer: Cubase LE 1.07
MIDI Controller/Audio Interface: Alesis Photon X25
