ableton midi pitchbend and simpler question

ive been trying to get that pitch bend synth thing that ive heard calvin harris use wqhere at the start or end of a chord or note it sweeps up an octave. ive been trying to achieve this using the pitch bend automation in abletons midi editing, the problem is it only works on some presets in massive and tal noisemaker (i dont have sylenth) and it doesnt sound good and it doesnt sound like its sweeping up a whole octave even when i drag it down to the bottom and it changes the pitch of the melody too so is it better to try this with a pitch envelope within massive itself.

also another question is with simpler, is there a free vst that does the same thing but doesnt speed up the sample, because anything an octave above middle c just becomes indesernible to the human ear

The reason why it only works occasionally is because the pitch bend data isn't absolute - even though Ableton shows you the values from -8192 to +8192, they don't directly correlate to notes or octaves; it's basically just a percentage (don't look at those numbers...) of the pitch wheel's movement. Pretty much every synth that can receive pitch bend (which is almost all of them) also has a setting on how much to bend at the extremes, usually set in semitones. You'll have to set this at an octave (12 semitones) from the synth for your octave-bend to work.

Another thing that could work is trying out glide (if the synth has it)

That will lock the sound on that effect though, in case you only want it occasionally

You can always automate the glide amount - or better yet, map it to a knob on a controller and adjust it live while playing.
