All Deaf Hear Drums/effak
iight im in alabama for the break and
one of my late christmas presents would be a turntable
we went to several pawn shop-esc places..
found some great records
and a turntable
a pioneer PL-71 but it doesn't have a needle
the TT is 60 and the needle i think would be 30
i know vir. nothing so i might be buying the wrong thing

but there are usb turntables for cheaper...
so should i buy the usb?

primary need: sampling from LP's and occasional scratching..

If you wanna scratch at all get a direct drive traditional turntable. A decent one will run you 100 bucks on craigslist.

For sampling a usb would be fine, but for scratching, you will lack pickup and torque power.

Some SL1200 are cheap if you can find one used.

Some USB turntables will only let you listen while you are recording. Also, if it is only USB, and has no phono out, you have two issues. Chances are you could buy a better phono preamp in the future. Second, if it doesn't have a line out, the A/D converters will likely be worse than what you have/want to have in the future.

On the flip side, if you don't have a good soundcard, this makes it a lot cheaper than doing both at once. If it is flexible and has extra outs to use "normally" you can run it through better equipment later.

I'd go traditional though, unless you are using a stock soundcard and don't plan to upgrade for a LONG time.

Id get a portable TT such as Vestax Handy Trax.

But since you want to scratch then maybe you should look for Technics 1200.
