ASIO Driver / Soundcard - Noob question

Hi guys,

This is a total noob question, I know but . . .
I've always used Asio4all to turn my on-board PC sound processor into an Asio driver - thereby reducing latency when using VST instruments etc. Trouble is it keeps crashing and so I decided to upgrade to a better PCI-E sound card in the style of the M-Audio Audiophile but I discovered my motherboard doesn't have the required PCI-E slot for those.

So now I'm considering a low-end external sound card such as the Focusrite Scarlet. Will that work as a replacement for the Asio4all / on-board sound card setup that I have currently or is this a waste of time & money? Is there an easier way to get around this issue.

Thanks in advance,
C

The 2nd gen Scarletts seem to have pretty decent latency performance. Wouldn't get a 1st gen unit for this (if you're considering buying used, make sure what you're getting).
