computer power & investing

how much CPU or memory would I want if I want to load lots of VSTs and VSTis?
i find that when i load up too much synths or run multiple software, my program crashes.

also, should i invest more in sample packs / synths / daw?
right now, everything i use is free (and legal).
i combine lmms and reaper (make loop in lmms, bounce them out and layout in reaper)
i use zynaddsubfx for my synth and sometimes synth1 when i want to use presets.

should i have more mainstream synths like massive if i want to make a crazier sound full of modulation?

i know that i can probably do all the expensive software can do with practice, but i was wondering if i was saving money but wasting time.
or would it be the same for free and costly stuff; just practice and the result & effort will be the same?

For using multiple vst's I think thay you need at 8 gb of ram and cpu about 3 gh (dual core or even better quad core). For daw, I think that you can do pretty much the same in reaper compared to cubase or other daws.
