3 Things Producers Should Do Before Promoting Their Music Online

There are so many talented producers out here, which makes promoting your music more difficult. But if you know how to properly promote yourself online and learn to make the right connections, you can be on your way to getting your music out into the world like a professional. However, before you attempt to promote your music you should follow these 3 steps.

1. Make sure you're music is ready to share with the world.

This is a very important point. If you promote a bad track, it'll be hard to bounce back. It's better to wait until you're absolutely certain that your music is on point than to put out something you'll regret later. Instead, you’ll want to get feedback from respected people in the industry first, such as someone with A&R experience.

If you don’t have many connections in the professional world, you could submit your tracks to an online music feedback service, such as Singrush. It’s a platform where artists, bands, and producers can host their music for free and compete with one another, with the top liked song in each genre being showcased weekly.

2. Brand yourself.

Although promoting your music is the main objective, promoting yourself and your business name are equally important. You should see yourself as not just a producer, but as a product. This product (you and/or your business) has to be as appealing as possible. Your brand must be unique and exciting so that your customers are excited about you AND your music.

You don't have to be out front as the spokesperson for your business, but your image needs to be as polished as your music. You can go to places like Fiverr or 99Designs to have your logo and other custom graphics designed without breaking the bank.

3. Know your target audience.

Even the best music can get the worst response if it's presented to the wrong audience. It’s unrealistic to think that your music will appeal to everyone. You should take some time to define your ideal customer. Create a written profile of this person by asking yourself who, what, when, where, how, and why. Imagine your music being a solution to a problem that they have. Understanding the wants and needs of your customer will make your music promotion efforts much easier.

While there are other factors to consider before promoting your music online, I believe that these are the most important ones. If you miss any of these 3 steps, you will struggle with selling your music online.
