Okay, so this mic has 2 switches on the back. One is the pad switch. It has -10 and +10. What does it do to my vocals if I have it on -10 and what will it do if its on +10? The other switch has a straight line and a slanted line that goes into a straight line. What will it do to my vocals if its on the straight line and what will it do if its on the slanted one? You can see the switches here http://i.seimg.net/images/889562/main/at4040.jpg

-10db means it cuts the signal by 10 times +10db means it amplifies the signal by 10 times

the other switch is a low pass filter, most likely a rumble filter to reduce sensitivity to floor born noise via the stand into the mic itself

it gives it a 10 db boost (i assume that it also has a 0db position - in most cases you should leave it set there)

The boost/cut switch can be useful if you're recording very quiet or very loud sources respectively. In regular vocal usage you won't need it at all.
