Hi guys! I have a question.

Hi guys! I have a question.

I produce mostly house and progressive house and what I have noticed is that my tracks often sound too simple. At most I have drums like kick and snare and maybe some hihats, lead synth for melody, bassline and some sidechain-compressed white noise to spice up the highs.

From what I hear, most house songs in the main heaviest part sound much more complex with many layers of sound. I have no idea what should I add, I can maybe separate higher notes from lower in my melodies and use different synth patches, but I really can't seem to hear properly what's going on in most house tracks.

Can anyone lay out for me a structure of what's being played during the heaviest part of a typical house track?
Thanks for reading :)
David.

Hi -

Hi -

I am very new to setting up equipment and have been trying to read as much as possible on how to do just a basic setup...but I can't seem to get it right. I am pretty sure I have everything I need, but was hoping that some people with more experience than I would be able to answer a few questions and assist me with my setup.

Equipment:
1 Yamaha 215V Speaker
1 JRX100 Sub
2 Crown XLS 402 Amps
1 dbx 223XL Crossover
1 Behringer XENYX 802 Mixer
1 Macbook Pro
1 Apogee Duet
1 Akai Professional MPK 61

The first thing I want to do is wire the speakers through the amps through the crossover through the mixer through the computer.

#1. Do I set the crossover for Stereo or Mono?
#2. I currently use the 1/4'' Jack on the back of the Yamaha215V (there are 2 jacks and it says parallel - I am assuming anyone may be used), to connect to the amp using the bridge input on the amp. The same type of setup is used for the JRX100 into the 2nd amp using the bridge input as well. Is this step correct? Also, what is the difference from using the bridge connector vs. the dual connector on the back of the amp?

#3. (This is where it is most confusing for me) - I currently have the amp (running my Yamaha215V) going from the output 1 XLR to channel 2 on my crossover plugged into my High connector on the back (assuming this is the output). There is also a Low (Stereo)/ Mid (Mono) connector on channel 2 that I am not plugging anything into. Is this setup correct? Also, when/why would I use the Low (Stereo)/ Mid (Mono) connector (also relates back to a previous question of whether I should be in Stereo or Mono mode)? Another speaker?

#4. The amp running my JRX100 goes to channel 1 in the Low/LF Sum (Stereo) / Low/Mid (Mono). Is this correct? Also, similar question, there is another connector on channel 1 for High (Stereo) / Not Used (Mono)...when would I use this one and/or should I be using it now?

#5. There is a LF Sum/Low Sum switch on the back of my crossover. My understanding is that if I am using a sub, I want it to be set to Summed? I have it pushed in now, but I guess if I am supposed to be in Mono mode, it isn't used anyway. What/when should I use this switch?

#6. (This part I have no idea) - Now I need to go from my crossover to my mixer. How do I do that? I thought I would use the XLR input from channel 1 on the back of my crossover and go to the phones 1/4'' jack on my mixer? Do I need to use another connector from the input on channel 2 of the crossover to another jack on my mixer?...so there is a L & a R?

#7. Lastly, I need to go from my mixer to my computer. I use the L & R jack on the Line In 3/4 channel of the mixer to my laptop sound out jack? Is this correct? I originally thought I should use the Main Out jacks on the mixer but read somewhere that is wrong?

#8. What do I use the Main Out jacks on my mixer for? Connecting to my crossover? From a previous question, do I just need to plug into a L jack on the mixer?

I know these are a lot of questions but I really appreciate and be really thankful for any help/assistance that can be provided.

Thanks in advance!

Hey guys I really hope its ok if I post here but im desperate and I really need dj’s advice. I am...

Hey guys I really hope its ok if I post here but im desperate and I really need dj’s advice. I am the girlfriend of a dj. We have been together for 3 years. I used to be against it but then I realized that it was his dream so I try to always support. He dj’s in a very dangerous area, so its not like normal places. I actually have to worry if hell be shot. This probably doesn’t make sense but I don’t want to go into too much detail.

Anyways he dj’s out of the country and I go, I really don’t mind either. I will put my plans on the side to support him. The only thing I want is to go with him when he plays because I feel more secure AND I can support him. I am not all over him I am on the side.

When he is not djing we go to raves, all the time. Out of the country. He does not speak my language when we go but I still try to be supportive. Out of this year we have gone to countless raves, and I have only asked him to go to one of my events.

3 months ago I asked him to go to a concert that was very special to me, and he has told me that he would turn down shows if he had previous plans with me, or wouldn’t go to raves if we had something VERY important to me, because I really never have anything special. SO I ask him over and over “you have no plan?” “you can go right?” and he said yes, so I bought us both tickets. I spend 100 dollars and it was set. About a day ago (a week before the concert) he tells me he isn’t going to go and doesn’t care that we have plans because he is going to a rave out of town. I ask him if hes playing and he says no. I say im very upset but can I at least go with you since I don’t have anyone to go to the concert with and he says no. I would understand if he was given a great opportunity to play at some huge show but its not like that. He just wants to party.

Also I would like to mention that I have already agreed to stay with him and give him years to try to get famous before I move to LA for a job. He says once he gets famous hell move with me. I am trying my best to be supportive so much that I am willing to just wait to see if he gets famous.

So again I am sorry but I really want to know how dj’s see this. I can ask girls or people with regular jobs but I was a genuine view. If this is not ok I wont post again please forgive me.

I don't want a mac because I just don't do apple, and plus they're out of my budget. Was looking for a laptop to record music, finally got everything together but my other laptop has broke :/.

Using a USB interface with a condenscer mic and it's JUST ME recording vocals. I own a guitar but don't "really" intend on recording with it much", may use it every now and then but definately won't be a regular occurence. I use FL studio, but also have "reason" on my comp so may use that every now and then (not much).

All I will it use for is

1) Internet (youtube ALOT, normal websites etc and also college work, I like to have 5-20 tabs open simultaneously).
2) FL Studio, Reason, recording program
3) Word documents

I may watch movies every now and then hardly ever, and don't really plan to play graphic intensive games at all.

As we all know networking is the one of the most important keys to building a career in the music industry. However, outside of the established events such as BLAP and iStandard showcases, what else do you guys recommend attending as a producer? There's so many company's hosting "networking" events but so few of them are truly professional so Im just hoping that some of you guys can share some events that you've attended and felt were well worth the time, money and effort.

What's up FP?

It just dawned on me that I have been on FP for 10 years as of this month. I haven't really been on much as of late but i wanted to share some things I've learned along the way over the years.

Decide early on what you are doing it for. Are you doing it for yourself, for fame, money, just to prove to yourself you can find some success in one of the toughest industries there is? That will help you along your way because you will always have a goal in mind. People say that you shouldn't do it only for the money, and to be perfectly honest in the early years you probably won't make a living off it it, but guess what, doing it for the love (and even for the props) won't pay the bills. After all, this is the music BUSINESS so act accordingly.

Once you decide on what you are doing it for, respect the damn craft. Don't just buy a program and a keyboard and start putting out BS. Take time to learn an instrument, study different genres of music, read books and articles about mixing, practice songwriting, learning your tools and become the best you can. Over the years I have always made an effort to "level up" every 4-6 months, meaning that if I listen to something today and compare to something 6 months ago, it is a lot better in every aspect, from the mix, drums, arrangement, etc.

Once you start to get your craft in order, learn the business. Marketing, publishing, etc. If you don't know how to market yourself or you don't understand how publishing works, how will you eventually begin to build a name for yourself and make money?

Network. This is of course one of the most important things you need to work at. The music industry is like a high school popularity contest these days.I am from Georgia and when I finished school I bought a one way ticket to LA and networked my tail off and built relationships that are paying huge dividends to this day. As an unknown producer, one way to do this is to give your stuff out for free to artists who have a buzz going on. Now I didn't directly just give out beats though, what I did was I found all the up and coming artists around the country who were doing shows and had a little buzz and I did compilation albums, my beats, their songs. Blogs would pick up the singles and mixtapes and that is how I started to build a name for myself. Be creative in when it comes to networking, the possibilities are endless. To add, not every artist is going to mess with you, so what? Keep it moving, everyone thinks they are a rapper these days anyway, there are plenty of dope artists around.

Working with artists is not the only way. There is TV and film, etc. and sync fees can be pretty good as well as the royalties from those syncs. You don't have any artists in you town to work with? Okay, make sample free instrumentals and try to place them in tv, film, videos games, etc. via sync houses. These days they tend to use music from indie artists and composers anyway, they can pay them less than the major artists, but the money can still be pretty good.

Take risks and make sacrifices. Everyone is different, for me I am from a small town in Georgia, no way a hip-hop career was going to take off here, so I moved to LA. I always say NYC and LA is the place to be, that is where most of the industry is. Atlanta is cool, but it's still no NYC or LA...you probably won't find yourself in a meeting with WB or Atlantic if you aren't at least out in those cities and networking with these people often. Twitter and all that is cool, even a necessity, but you have to show face.

Don't give up. More than likely things will get hard along your journey. Personally, I worked part time jobs I hated and would be looking at my bank account wondering if I should get a full time job or focus continue with my music. This is a personal thing, everyone has their limit, I chose to stick with it and it paid off. Don't be foolish though, if things aren't moving and you know your heart is not in it, there is nothing wrong with creating music for the joy it brings you.

That's pretty much it, it just takes a lot of grit, hard work, and persistance. If you want to know more feel free to ask or hit me up on Twitter, @nobodyfamous

Good luck!

Hey everyone!

First of all, I must say I do some "brostep" songs, with those high energy lines, dirtorted wobbles, and all those things that are a must for the style.

BUT, in my new track, I'm trying to make a sound more "old school dubstep", which I think will be just perfect for the dark mood of the song. Therefore, lately, I'm listening to a lot of old school dubstep, and Skream was one artist that called my attention, specially in his EPs Skreamism (vl.1 and 2).

The problem is, I have no idea how to make my drums sound deep and more "quiet", like he does in his tracks. Everytime I try to make it, I just end having a very dark moody melody with a more "in the face" kick and snare, which obviously don't fit together.

I even tried to change the kick and snare samples, for ones more old school, but that was no good. My question is: is this just a problem of volume of both, or I must apply something like a filter?

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Ill put a list of stuff that makes learning piano easier from ****ing around with it in zebra.ten things ive learned I think:

The first lone BLACK note is also A sharp,so anything left of it is a natural A

ALL Double BLACK notes are C and D SHARP/D and E FLAT

ALL Triple BLACK notes is F,G,A SHARP

Double WHITE notes to the left of the DOUBLE BLACK keys are ALWAYS B,C

Double WHITE notes to the right of the DOUBLE Black keys are always E,F

D is always located in between the Double BLACK keys

A is ALWAYS to the right of the middle Black key in the Triple black

88 key is the easiest to use because there is less limitations than the 76 key one.

All notes that have the same letter have the same SOUND in a DIFFERENT PITCH

You can use the black keys to find White keys easier because of this stuff

Is this correct or was that pure baka?

---------- Post added at 10:24 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:38 PM ----------

Ok lemme add some more things to this list.

"chords" are 3 notes and like i said earlier, identical letters will sound exactly the same but in a different pitch/tone
like eh...A,C,E Middlerange (i still cant read symbols so ill just give em my nicknames)

Play another three notes but they ot to be the same thing like Bass A,C,E or treble A,C,E to understand whats goin on alittle bit.
The first note on a real piano is always A,last is Always a C

---------- Post added at 10:27 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:24 PM ----------

To make playing this big Ass thing easier i suggest you sit in some type of chair, and have your left arm in the second Triple black while having your right arm in the area of the 5th/6th triple black notes so you can reach notes alittle bit faster.

Could be wrong about this though.I'll keep adding to this thread to try and help myself/you guys out if you are like me and literally just got an 88 key midi keyboard a month ago.

---------- Post added at 10:32 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:27 PM ----------

Another little thing ive noticed, most songs start with a C note almost every time so i think you guys already know what C sounds like,so just keep pressing the keys of the piano in an order to learn the sounds of each letter.like eh...

For instance press A all the way to the left, then keep pressing each A till you remember their sound, then learn B's sound, then C etc.
I believe they call that "learning by ear"

---------- Post added at 10:37 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:32 PM ----------

Now if you are trying to play a midi keyboard without even looking at the notes i cant help you with that,i guess that will have to be a self taught thing for you guys.Damn wait a second i forgot to mention something,if your computer has more than a 700mhz cpu download a program called pianissimo so you can practice as loud as you want without disturbing your family,it emulates a real grand piano and sounds DECENT compared to the real thing.this WILL NOT sound as rich as a real piano because its 80 mb,but it sounds good.

Hey what's up, guys. I started a private facebook group for no more than 20 producers, where we can give each other constructive feedback on beats.

I know sometimes it's easy to get over looked in the section, because of the amount of posters here. It's open to anyone, you just have to post at least 2 beats a month. You have to also be willing to give and receive feedback.

If anyone is interested just friend and message me at http://www.facebook.com/Hotsongbeats
