so i've been emailing back and forth with this dude... he said he wanted to do a mix for me.
so i send him the pro tools session (two tracked beat and vocal stems) and he sends me an email back with his mix and the message "here's the mix... i don't like it. i could make it better if you give me the beat stems." or something like that.

here's the file he sent me... jogging MIX.mp3

at that point i decided to do a mix of my own and sent it back to him....

here's my mix..... ht - jogging season.mp3

he sends me an email back saying that he thinks the mid frequencies are too high in the beat and that he wants the beat stems so he can make a pocket for the vocals.

i respond and ask him if i can hear any of his other work. so he sends me a few youtube music videos... this is one of them....
Sadat X "Fake Out" (OFFICIAL VIDEO) - YouTube (i happen to be a fan of sadat x)

so i send him the beat stems and he sends me a new mix....
this is his new mix.... Jogging Skamm MIX SPLIT 1.mp3

am i getting taken for a ride here? the vocals don't sound crisp to me on his mix... like they aren't compressed at all. and i think he took a lot of the character out of the sample... sounds like the sample is playing through small radio speakers or something. what do you guys think here?

---------- Post added at 04:16 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:14 PM ----------

two tracking the beat should not be a problem in my opinion.... i know lots of people at all levels of the game who two track beats with vocals over the top.

Hey everybody,

Hey everybody,

Just signed up to get help about a recurring issue in my mixes. I am mixing metal songs containing, for the most part, 2 rhythm guitars, a lead guitar, synths, bass and drums. I have applied all the correct mixing techniques (from what I've read), but my mixes end up sounding such that the instruments appear to be "separate" or "apart" rather than "together". I don't know how else to express this, it just feels like everything is there, correct panning, layering, volume levels, but somehow the mix sounds like it's a set of different instruments playing rather than a whole song.

Is this common in beginners' mixes and if so, what advice do you have for me?

Thanks a lot!

So I've been making electronic music for several years now but I've never really looked into mastering. I'd like to start but I have no idea where to begin. I have googled mastering and apparently there are mastering plugins available but they all seem to cost a fair amount of money.

I'm looking to record vocals on a track of mine and all I have his a Blue Yeti Mic. I haven't been having much luck neutralizing the noise in the bg but the quality of the audio is pretty decent.

But I'm looking to get something else. Can anyone recommend any good vocal mics, preferably USB but I'll take other suggestions as well, for home recording? My studio is simply a desktop computer and a living room.

I've been told the Shure SM58 is pretty good but I'd like to have other opinions as well.

I have really just learned the true aspects of mixing and mastering and what people were telling me about fixing the frequncies!
I did a whole bunch of beats for a beat instrumental cd and exported them to listen in the car with major problems. Sounded like my speakers were cracked! lol. So I had to go learn why and how to fix it. Which led me down a long road of mixing & mastering! But it was well worth it! Check out this little youtube video of me really mixing & mastering the way I just learned recently! First video is finish product why'll placing the beat. Starting at 7 minutes! Second video is me actually doing most of the mixing and mastering. Since the video was to long for you tube I cut out some stuff and fast forwarded certin parts!

Hi,
I am just curious where there is the border between my skills and commercial sound. I produce for just 2 years and I know that I still need much more experience but Iīd like to know in which aspect one can clearly hear the difference between my tracks and a commercial track so that I know on what to work.

Here an example which I made very quickly in about 10 minutes (remake of a part of hardwell-spaceman):

htt ps://soundcloud.com/technotronics/spaceman-1 (remove the space between htt and ps to visit the link; as I am new to this forum I guess for antispam they donīt allow me to input links directly)

As I donīt have PA speakers and so I canīt test it but would this sound as fat as any commercial track in clubs or would there miss somethging? What would miss? Amd am I on a good road towards commercial sound or am I still very far away?

Hope someone can answer this questions who knows better than I and give me some tips on what to do better in future.
