decibel- the unit of volume of a sound. the system of decibels works in a system of powers of ten. For example. What is twice as loud in actuallity is hardly even distinguished to us. What DOES sound twice as loud is actually 10 TIMES as loud. There is an equation for this, which is:
B(beta) = 10(log(I/Io)
(the log is to base 10)
I is the intensity of the sound and Io is the intensity of the softest sound audible to the human ear, which is ... well I forget offhand what it is. but, it's something times ten to the -12th.
and I is defined by the equation:
I=P/(4(pi)r^2)
p is power, r is the distance from the source to where the sound is being heard
